How Hyperfocal Works

Learn how AI transforms your descriptions into professional Lightroom presets.

The AI Behind Your Presets

Hyperfocal uses advanced AI models trained on thousands of professional photo edits to understand the relationship between visual descriptions and Lightroom adjustments. When you describe a look, our AI translates your words into precise slider values across dozens of parameters.

From Words to Presets

Here's what happens when you generate a preset:

  1. Understanding Your Intent: The AI analyzes your description, identifying key aesthetic concepts like "warm," "moody," "filmic," or "clean."
  2. Mapping to Parameters: These concepts are translated into specific Lightroom adjustments. "Warm" might increase color temperature and add orange to highlights, while "moody" could lift blacks and reduce clarity.
  3. Balancing Values: The AI ensures all adjustments work together harmoniously, avoiding combinations that would create unnatural results.
  4. Generating XMP: Finally, the settings are encoded into a standard XMP file that Lightroom and Photoshop ACR can read.

What the Hyperfocal AI Adjusts

Each generated preset can modify dozens of Lightroom parameters, including:

Basic Adjustments

  • Exposure & Contrast
  • Highlights & Shadows
  • Whites & Blacks
  • Texture, Clarity & Dehaze
  • Vibrance & Saturation

Tone Curve

  • Parametric curve adjustments
  • Point curve modifications
  • RGB channel curves

Color Grading

  • White balance (temperature & tint)
  • HSL adjustments (hue, saturation, luminance)
  • Color grading wheels (shadows, midtones, highlights)
  • Color mixer

Effects & Detail

  • Vignette
  • Grain
  • Sharpening
  • Split toning

Reference Image Analysis (paid plans)

When you upload a reference image, the AI performs a deep analysis of the photo's visual characteristics:

  • Color palette extraction: Identifying dominant colors in shadows, midtones, and highlights
  • Contrast analysis: Understanding the tonal range and contrast style
  • Color grading detection: Recognizing color shifts and split toning
  • Mood interpretation: Assessing the overall feel (warm/cool, bright/moody, clean/vintage)

This analysis is then converted into Lightroom adjustments that recreate the look on your own photos.

Why Results May Vary

While our AI is highly capable, there are some factors that affect results:

  • Starting point matters: A preset that looks perfect on one photo may need adjustment on another due to different lighting, exposure, or colors in the original image.
  • Subjective interpretation: Words like "cinematic" or "moody" can mean different things to different people. Being more specific in your prompts helps.
  • Non-destructive foundation: Presets are designed as starting points. The expectation is that you'll tweak the results to match your specific photo.

The XMP Format

All Hyperfocal presets are delivered as XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) files. This is Adobe's standard format for storing Lightroom develop settings and offers several benefits:

  • Universal compatibility: Works with Lightroom Classic, Lightroom CC, and Photoshop ACR
  • Non-destructive: Presets don't modify your original photos; they just store adjustment instructions
  • Fully editable: Every slider can be adjusted after applying the preset
  • Shareable: Easy to share with other photographers or use across multiple devices

LUT Export (Preset+LUT Plans)

For users on Preset+LUT plans, Hyperfocal can also export your presets as LUTs (Look-Up Tables). LUTs are useful for video editing software like DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, and Final Cut Pro, allowing you to maintain consistent color grading across photo and video work.

Continuous Improvement

We're constantly improving Hyperfocal's AI based on user feedback and the latest advances in machine learning. The presets you generate today will only get better as we refine our models. Your feedback on generated presets helps us understand what works and what needs improvement.
